Chronothermostat: which one to choose?

In this guide we will clarify what the  differences between the types of  chronothermostats  on the market so that it is easier to understand which model to buy based on your needs.

Before starting a small note. In this article we will talk specifically about  chronothermostat , so it is important to have a clear  difference between thermostat and chronothermostat . If you are looking for a programmable thermostat, then you are still in the right place!

Having closed the note, let's see the models available on the market.

Analog chronothermostat

Probably none of you are looking for it anymore, but for completeness we decided to include it in this guide. Forget about displays and navigation menus, here they are only   knobs and mechanics ! This is an ideal product for those who have   unfamiliarity  with  digital  and have no particular functionality needs.

Digital chronothermostat

The digital chronothermostat is probably the one we are most used to. In addition to the common operations of  on/off programming  and  reduction/comfort adjustment , allows the user to:

  • Take advantage of features such as  offset  and  antifreeze
  • Having a resolution of the measurement is more accurate, normally to the tenth of a degree
  • Some models offer features such as  holiday  o  cleaning , which allows the temporary suspension of the set program.

WiFi programmable thermostat

The  wifi chronothermostat   can be seen as an evolution of the digital one, to which it adds the possibility of  remote control via smartphone  or via voice assistants such as Google Home or Alexa. This:

  • makes the programming  of the chronothermostat extremely simple , as it is carried out via the app
  • allows you to have a more detailed overview of consumption .

Naturally, to work it requires a  wifi connection in the home , in the absence of which many models can still be activated as normal thermostats.

Wireless chronothermostat

This device  takes advantage of  radio communication  with a receiver positioned in the boiler room thus allowing the chronothermostat to be installed in places where there is no cable connection.

  • Immediately remove all people from the area.
  • Turn off any gas appliances safely if possible.
  • Open all windows  and doors to facilitate ventilation.
  • Leave the house and, once safe, contact an emergency number (e.g. fire brigade).

Chronothermostat: how to choose the right model

Now that we have had an overview of the types of devices, we can move on to the questions that can help us in the choice.

  • Daily or weekly?  It depends a lot on your  habits . Simplifying we can say that the more repetitive you are, the more the choice can fall on the daily. You can learn more in the article  Daily or weekly chronothermostat?  or you can choose a chronothermostat that can switch from daily to weekly programming at any time:  Freetime Evo daily-weekly digital chronothermostat .
  • 230V or battery?  The simplest solution in terms of installation is undoubtedly battery powered . In fact, it offers more freedom in choosing the position, maximum in the case of wireless devices, and you only have to worry about connecting the boiler cables.

The  230V is certainly the most popular solution for wifi chronothermostats, in this case in addition to the boiler cables, we will also have the two mains voltage cables. If we choose a 230V powered device we must therefore first worry about checking the presence of the power cables or the possibility of bringing them to the point where we want to install the chronothermostat.

  • Is just one device enough?  It depends on  own needs  and from  structure of your home system . In general we can say that the number of chronothermostats follows the number of zones in the system, then obviously we are the ones who decide in which space we need to control comfort best!

At this point you have all the information for an informed choice to manage your heating system, but in case of doubts or questions our  support team is always available!
