Hygge: meaning and style

Our new   battery-powered Wi-Fi chronothermostat , has a strange name at first glance,   hygge , but what does it mean? Is there a relationship between this word and heating?

Where does the word hygge come from?

It is not known precisely where the word comes from  hygge , there are however some hypotheses that seem more probable. According to some it derives from Germanic  hyggja  which means “to feel satisfied”. Another hypothesis instead identifies the order of the etymology in Old Norse  hugge , which means “to hug”. According to another theory, however, it derives from the Norse  hygga , “to console”.

But although there are doubts about the origin, it is known that approximately  between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century , there is evidence of its appearance in a  Danish text , and from that moment the word became part of the Danish language, becoming a true distinctive feature of their culture.

Hygge: what is the meaning?

We have seen that the etymology of the word refers to a sphere that we could generalize as the  caring and happiness . Indeed, it is in this context that the current meaning of the term leads us.

Do you know when on a winter evening you curl up on the sofa with a blanket with soft lights and perhaps watching a good film with your family? Here, this is essentially the concept that the word  hygge  vehicle.

So, although the literal translation of  hygge  both "warmth, intimacy", the term brings with it much more, evoking a intimate atmosphere, being together, a welcoming environment .

The hygge home style

We have seen the meaning of the word  hygge , but there is a relationship with  house design ? Of course yes. Hygge refers to the classic style of Danish houses which, as we have seen, is characterized by a very welcoming and warm atmosphere.

The light plays a  central role  in the layout of an environment  hygge . A light  hot suffused , which tends towards yellow/orange is an essential contribution to creating a place  hygge . Precisely for this reason the Danes are the largest consumers of candles per capita!

Added to this is the choice of a  simple and functional furnishings , characterized by the presence of  wood  and from  warm colors , all to always evoke a sense of concentration and welcome.

In an environment like this, sharing cannot be missing, the happiness of small daily things and of being with family and friends, feeling free to express oneself and be oneself.
